Obituary

Avery Clemons was born on March 7, 1954, in West Memphis, Arkansas, to the late Aubrey and Lucille Clemons. He was the youngest child of their union. At the age of 10, his family moved to San Diego, California, where he attended Kennedy Elementary, Gompers Secondary, and Hoover High School. Later, he enlisted in the Marines and successfully completed boot camp.

Avery was a humble, family-oriented man with a contagious, infectious smile. His children meant the world to him, and family was very important to him. He was a soft-spoken man who was protective of his loved ones. A wonderful person with a handsome presence, Avery was never known to have enemies and never spoke a harsh word about anyone, regardless of the circumstances. Almost everyone he came in contact with fell in love with his personality. Avery was skilled with his hands and was always willing to help others, whether working on cars, plumbing, or construction jobs.

A native of San Diego, Avery relocated to Toledo, Ohio, in 2008, trading his California beach lifestyle for Ohio's snowy winters. Those who knew Avery knew he loved sipping on a Wild Irish Rose or a Screwdriver. He lived life on his terms and enjoyed fishing with his best friend, Fred, and listening to classic soul music. Whenever Mary Jane came on, he would be up dancing around and singing. Barbecuing was his "thang," and he was his own "Self-Proclaimed Grill Master." Avery was truly "One of a Kind."

On November 3, 2024, Avery, surrounded by his loving family, peacefully departed this life.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Aubrey Clemons Jr., his sister, Pamela Clemons, and his grandfather, Curtis Jewell Sr.

Avery leaves behind cherished memories with his daughter, Leticia Clemons ("Ticia"); his son, Avery Clemons ("Darnell"); six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and his partner of 16 years, Donna Gilmer. He is also survived by his siblings: his oldest sister, Helen Collins; Mary Clemons, whom he affectionately called "Mae Cat"; Judy Mc Castle ("Baby Sis"), all of Toledo, Ohio; Valonda Clemons and Deborah Clemons, both of St. Louis; and his brothers, Lewis Collins ("Sonny") of Toledo, Ohio, and Anthony and Aubrey Clemons, both of Alabama. Additionally, he leaves behind his uncle, Curtis Jewell Jr., of Toledo, Ohio, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, stepchildren, grandchildren, and friends.

The family will receive friends at Castillo Funeral Home, 1757 Tremainsville Rd., on Saturday after 11 AM, followed by funeral services at 1 PM.
