IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charles Richard
Smith
December 23, 1931 – February 11, 2023
Charles Richard Smith (Dick), a lifelong resident of Toledo, Ohio, was reunited with his beloved wife Charlene and daughter Andrea on February 11, 2023, at the age of 91. He was born on December 23, 1931, to Anthony John and Leona Smith. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, 1 brother, daughter Andrea and wife Charlene.
Dick graduated from Whitmer High school in 1950 and began to work at EI DuPont on Tremainsville in Toledo. His work there was interrupted when he joined the National Guard and was soon called up to the Army. He proudly served in Korea in the Eighth Army, 10th Division. After his military service he returned to work at DuPont for a total of 40 years. He was Maintenance supervisor at the time of his retirement. Dick remained proud of his service in the Army and proud of the United States of America his entire life. He always saluted when the national anthem was played. He would stand at attention and never moved until the anthem stopped.
Dick married Charlene (McLaughlin) in 1955. They had three children, 9 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. All of his grandchildren loved him dearly and he was very good to each of them. As his granddaughter Kady said, "To say you were a great guy is an understatement…you were one of the best. You loved your family tremendously and with everything you had.". Dick loved to tinker around the house, yard and garage. Grandson Jon lovingly said he was a tinker of many things and completer of few. He would often give or sell the item when he did complete it.
Dick is survived by son Michael R. (Beth) Smith and daughter Karen McIlhargey. Grandchildren, Matthew (Heather) Smith, Jonathan Smith, Martin (Sally) Ellis, Gregory (Vicky) Ellis, Daniel (Amber) Ellis, Kelly Guzman (Chris Motz), Kristi Germain (Zach Badhorn), Kady (Drew)Snyder, Jocelyn (Mike) Bongorno, twenty great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews and cousins.
Dad, Grandpa, Uncle we are so grateful to have had you and your love in our lives for so long. You are already greatly missed but we are also grateful that you are at peace and have joined the loved ones who preceded you to heaven.
