Obituary

Merwin E. Speweike, 87, of Toledo, Ohio, died on March 14, 2025, in his home.

Merwin was born on March 25, 1937, in Curtice, Ohio, to Emil and Irene Speweike.

He received his education at Ohio School for the Deaf in Columbus, Ohio, and Clay High School in Oregon, Ohio, before becoming a bricklayer. He was a Local 3 Union bricklayer and spent most of his career with S.A. Storer & Sons Co. and other contractors.

During his career, Merwin earned numerous awards and accolades for his work, including second place in a national bricklaying apprenticeship competition in Chicago at 18 years old.

He was an avid bowler and participated in several national and international competitions, achieving his goal of bowling a 300 game and earning several rings. He was also an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting.

Merwin was a member of the Toledo Deaf Club and participated on the club's athletic teams.

He valued his faith and attended Good Shepherd of the Deaf Lutheran Church.

Merwin is survived by his sons, Jeffery and David, grandchildren, Camille, Jessica, Jackson and Lucas, great-grandchildren, Lyndon and Fallon Lake, sister, Carol Striker, and multiple nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Arvin Striker.

A private memorial service will be held by his immediate family.
