IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sharon Lee
(Schellhase) Etzel
April 10, 1943 – September 11, 2022
Born on April 10, 1943 in Toledo to Anna and James Schellhase. Because her work on this earth was done and she was justly rewarded, she went to the Kingdom of Heaven on Sept. 11, 2022, when her battle with dementia ended.
Her early grade school days were spent at St. James Catholic School in the Old South End; then, Harvard (yes, really Harvard but not "that Harvard"); then, Libbey High School, graduating in 1961. Always the nurturer, she attended St. Vincent's School of Nursing, graduating in 1964. Having been a nurse for 50 years where she met many life-long and dear friends, she was a head nurse at St. Vincent's (3B wing), went to Riverside Hospital and ended her nursing career at St. Charles as an OR nurse. She also practiced in several doctor's offices.
Sharon was so hilarious, and you could always be guaranteed a belly laugh when you spent time with her. Ask anyone about her humor--her son, Dave, about the Champion towel incident or her grandson, David, about the "handicrapper" episode--and you will be guaranteed a good laugh. When she retired in 2009, her friends arranged for a surprise male stripper. That party was one of the funniest ever seen (be sure to see the photos at her visitation).Whenever a family member called her and asked her what she was doing, her response was "What did you do now?". Then, she got out her "Yellow Tool Box" to stitch up whatever damage was done. New adventures were also one of her biggest joys whether it was traveling to parts unknown or riding a mechanical bull on a visit to Texas.
Her love of God, country, family, friends (both unfurry and furry) and patients were paramount to her. Whenever she lost a patient, she was deeply affected by it. To know Sharon was to realize that God broke the mold when he created her as she was one-of-a-kind—loving, generous, selfless, hilarious,hard-working, independent, devout. Her extended family included many life-long friends. She never met a stranger. Those she loved, she did unconditionally, but she never told you what you wanted to hear but what you needed to hear which endeared her to all of us. All those who benefited from those characteristics were truly blessed. Thank you for all who visited, prayed, called, texted and cared for her. Her doctors, nurses and aides who lovingly cared for her are special to all of us whom she leaves behind.
Her love of all genres of music is legendary--from hymns, to any 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, etc. music (including Elvis and Metallica); and she knew the words to any song and could sing along whenever she played them.
She was a long-time parishioner at St. Clements Catholic Church, volunteering in the office and checking other parishioners' blood pressures, etc. Her daily saying of the rosary and going to mass every Sunday and holidayplus studying the Bible were such an important part of her life.
Leaving behind to cherish her memory are her son, Dave (Val) Etzel; sister, Judy (Bob Wilson) Kasper; grandsons, David Chevy Etzel and Dan Lewandowski; granddaughters, Katic Kovacs and Suzanne Lewandowski; four great grandson; three great granddaughters, including a new great granddaughter, Rosalee Marie born in July, who she never got a chance to meet; her brother, George's widow, four nieces and three nephews plus all those who've met her on her amazing life's journey, including her dear friends Cindy Heins and Valerie Swanson.
Preceding her in death were her mother and father, brother, George Makara, many aunts and uncles plus her former husband, David B. Etzel, with whom she remained friends.
Her family will receive friends at the Castillo Funeral Home, 1757 Tremainsville Rd. Friday from 4 – 7 PM with a Registered Nurse Honor Guard Cermony at 6 p.m. Visitation will continue at St. Clements Catholic Church 3030 Tremainsville Rd., on Saturday at 9:30 AM followed by Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM. There will be no burial.
The family suggests tributes to St. Clements Church, the Alzheimer's Association or Ebeid Hospice.
