Gilbert A. “Gil” Poirier, 79, departed this world to be with the Lord on October 6, 2022 surrounded with love. He was born in Detroit, Michigan and his family moved to Maxfield Lake in Hartland, Michigan where he gained his love for fishing and the outdoors.
Gil had a servant’s heart. As a lifetime member of the American Legion and a veteran of the United States Army, Gil was an advent servant to not only his country, but to every person he met. While serving in Frankfurt, Germany, Gil met his wife, Linda, of 56 years. After completing their service, Gil and Linda began their family in Toledo, Ohio. Gil was employed by General Motors in the Hydramatic Division, serving as a tool chaser, and retired after 42 proud years.
Gil never knew a stranger – he dedicated his life to helping those around him and he would give away half his house to help those in need. Gil spent countless hours fishing on the lake, golfing, grilling out and spending genuine time with his friends and family. Gil had an inquisitive mind and spent 20 years learning about coins and creating coin books for each of his grandchildren. Gil dedicated his time to volunteering for his church and many political campaigns.
Gil was preceded in death by his mother and father, Betty and Edwin Poirier; sister Diane Cottongim, brother in law, Fred Cottongim; brother Gregory Poirier; and grandson Jordan Poirier. He is survived by his wife, Linda Poirier; his three children, Daniel (Jovelyn) Poirier, Joseph Poirier, and Lorna Cervantes (Poirier); son-in law Enrique Cervantes; his sister Rosalyn Jones; multiple loving grandchildren, one great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
