Lewis VanKoughnet, age 79, of Toledo, Ohio passed away peacefully at St. Luke's Hospital. He was born in Toledo, Ohio to William and Mary VanKoughnet. Lewie graduated from Toledo CCHS in 1959. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve for 6 years. He worked as a mechanic and group leader at Toledo Edison for 28 years. Lewie enjoyed serving as a union steward for the IBEW Local 245. After retiring, he taught science and math for TPS.
In addition to being a hard worker, Lewie was a soccer coach and commissioner for TYSA. He loved all University of Michigan sports, particularly football. Lewie was very passionate about animals and music. Lewie is remembered for his sharp sense of humor, his love for seeking the whole story, and his charming way of engaging anyone in an intelligent debate.
Lewie is survived by his wife of 53 years, Christine (Augello); children William, Maria, and Kurt; brother Fred VanKoughnet and sisters Beth (Tom) Gettins and Chris (Gary) Grachek; and many beloved sisters and brothers in-law and nieces and nephews, whom he adored. Lewie was preceded in death by his parents and his brother William (Terry) VanKoughnet.
Lewie’s family will receive friends Saturday November 6th at 10 AM in Most Blessed Sacrament Church 2240 Castlewood Dr. followed by a Memorial Funeral Mass at 11 AM with refreshments to follow in the Kelly Room.
