Marilyn Dotson Obituary

Marilyn Jean “Granny” Dotson passed away on January 6, 2024, at the age of 74. She was born February 25, 1949, to Henry and Thelma Franklin in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Marilyn was the sixth child of ten siblings.

Marilyn moved to Toledo, Ohio at an early age with her mother and siblings. She attended the University of Toledo/Scott Park majoring in social work. Although she did not complete the course, she continued to work in the field just in a different way. Marilyn was known as “Granny” to many people. As she was always babysitting or had someone ‘s child in or out of the neighborhood, friends, or family.

Marilyn worked at Manufactures Enameling for many years. She met Melvin Dotson whom she married August 17, 1991. They enjoyed more than 32 years of marriage. They spent a lifetime together. After retiring from Manufactures, Marilyn became a volunteer working for the Area Office on Aging – RSVP program. She served for many years and received many awards from her time of service.

Marilyn had a wonderful voice and people loved to hear her sing. She was always in the church choir at Mt. Sinai Pentecostal under the late Bishop James A. Rayford until she joined Precious Blood Church under the leadership of Pastor Carl Jackson. She was faithful in her walk with God and in attendance until her health began to fail, however whenever she heard gospel music she perked up. Her body would not allow her to do what she wanted but her spirit was still willing to give praise unto God.

Marilyn was a soul that would give you her last and she oftentimes did. She would always pick up her phone no matter what time you called. She loved her husband (until the day death separated them), her daughter, granddaughter, and her great-grandson “Man” as she lovely called him.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin; parents, Henry, and Thelma Franklin; sisters, Betty Boyd, Mattie McCaster, and Ruthann Franklin; and brothers, Charles Johnson, and Barry Hite.

She is survived by her daughter, Heidi (Darrell) Berry; granddaughter, Makala Berry; great-grandson, Darnell Moody Jr.; sisters, Louise Birch of Phoenix, AZ, Marva Bauknight, and Sylvia Hite, both of Toledo, OH; and brother, Ronnie Hite of Toledo, OH; along with a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends.
