Richard Charles Dietsch, age 83, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 12, 2023. “Dick the Barber” was born in Toledo, Ohio, on October 27, 1939, to Dorothy and Maurice Dietsch.
Dick graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1957. At 17 years old, he enlisted in the US Army Reserves and served for 2 years. He attended Toledo Barber College and worked for his father until purchasing Friendly Service Barber Shop. His career as a professional barber stretched over 60 years and an estimated one million haircuts. In addition to an accomplished barber, Dick was a self-taught handyman who could fix practically anything.
Anyone who knew Dick, knows he loved being on the water at Devils Lake. Many memories were made swimming, skiing, tubing and having fun while at the cottage. If Dick wasn’t on the water, he could be found on the golf course, racquetball court, bowling alley, basketball court or softball field, but Never On Wednesday.
Above his career and many hobbies, Dick’s pride and joy was his family. Countless hours have been spent attending sporting events, band concerts, dance recitals, theater performances and more in support of his kids, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by both parents, sister, Linda Penn, and brothers Bill and Don.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart, dedicated partner and cherished wife of 63 years, Suzanne (nee Girard); children: Tony (Christy), Scott (Sue) and Kristi (Eric) Nelson; special nephew: Paul (Karen) Hasemeyer; grandchildren: TJ (Emily), Bryan (Megan), Stephanie (Matt) Kesselmayer, Aaron (Andrea), Kevin (Megan), Abby (Clayton) Barnes and Jake (Kiah) Nelson; plus 8 (soon to be 9) great-grandchildren.
Dick’s family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 21, from 3-7 pm at Castillo Funeral Home, 1757 Tremainsville Ave., Toledo. Friends and family are invited to share stories and memories at 6:30 pm. Memorial Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, June 22, 11 am at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 2240 Castlewood Dr., Toledo.
