John Curtis Vogel

Curt, age 85, went to be with His Lord on October, 26, 2017 at Rosary Care Center in Sylvania. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Catherine Vogel, his brother Richard, his grandsons Daniel Hogle, and Joshua Tucker.
Born in St. Louis, Missouri on September 7, 1932, he was a member of Holy Rosary Parish where he was an altar server during his school years. He was a member of the award winning gymnastics team at Beaumont High School and graduated in 1950. He worked at the famous Fox Theater and loved to share stories about his childhood memories.
He was drafted into the Korean War in 1953, and achieved the military rank of Sargent 1st Class and served with honor until 1955 and then relocated with his parents and brother to Toledo, OH.
He was introduced to the Toledo Council of Catholic Youth (TCCY) by a good friend and it was during this time he met his future wife Kay M. Huls, a undergraduate at Mercy Hospital. The couple were married in Jamestown, ND on October 12, 1957 and blessed with 6 children: Kurt, Paula (Craig) Iagulli, Joseph, Richard (Juli Rummel), Susan (Craig) Watterson, and Angela (Sean) Tucker. Precious grandchildren are Rob Hogle, Sommer Vogel, Jenilee (Oliver) Dolder, Jessica, Vanessa, Alex Vogel, Zack Cappelletty, Zoe Watterson, Savanna Vogel, Isabelle Tucker and Carla Iagulli, great-grandchildren Sebastian and Amelia Dolder.
Curt worked in the banking industry and retired from The DeVilbiss Company in 1990.
In 1970 he made a Cursillo which changed his life forever. He was ordained to the Permanent Diaconate in May of 1976. He organized the Engage Encounter program and recruited a team for the St. Agnes Religious Education program for youth and adults. He was an active deacon for St. Agnes parish, loved preparing couples and families for the Sacraments of Baptism and Matrimony, comforting loved ones at Wakes and Graveside Services. He was active with the R.C.I.A. programs, and was Chaplin for Boy Scouts Troup #20.
After St. Agnes Parish closed he was welcomed as Deacon at St. Catherine of Siena Parish, where he was introduced to the Prison Ministry. Deacon Curt was placed on Senior Status in 2011. His passion for Christ and love for people were felt by all.
His body will be received at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 4555 North Haven Road on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 4 PM with visitation until 8:00 PM. A Vigil Service will be held at 6:00pm. Visitation will continue Friday in the Church at 9:00a.m. followed by the Funeral Mass at 11:00am.
